Subject: Newark book launch
Things are building up nicely for the launch of 'Shackleton Boys' volume
1 at Newark on 1st and 2nd of September. We are expecting 27 contributors
to the book to attend, some on both days, with 18 coming on Saturday
and 13 on Sunday (one or two are still to decide which day). They will
be joined by quite a few wives and partners, and we are also expecting
a number from the Association plus the Coventry group with their cockpit
Local media have been alerted, a number of aviation websites are now
promoting the event and RAF stations and aircraft museums within a reasonable
range have all been targeted. We are also in touch with the various
Shackleton squadron associations, so all in all, it should be a good
turnout. The museum have arranged a BBMF Spitfire flypast on both days
(yes, they did try and get the Lancaster but it was not available).
I have attached a promotional flyer in case you can find a home for
a copy or two in your area.
The museum will give our attendees discounted entry - £4.50 as
against the regular over 65s price of £8.00. They will be open
for us from about 8.30 and the plan is to start the book signing by
10.30 and continue until lunch time. There will be a private buffet
lunch for all the attendees and their "others", and depending
on how busy it is, there will be a further signing session in the afternoon
before the museum closes at 5 pm. The Shackleton will be open for us
to get aboard, the Coventry group will be there with their T.4 cockpit,
and the Shackleton Association will also be present in the signing marquee.
John Davies from Grub Street will be "in charge" of proceedings.
All those signing get a free copy of the book, and John would also like
to know how many extra copies you might like (£20 a copy as against
the £25 cover price), so that he can be sure to bring enough.
Please let me know! It would also help the museum if you could let me
have the details of your car please.
There are several attendees staying over on the Saturday night (or simply
not in a rush to go home), and we thought it might be a nice idea to
have an informal gathering in a local hostelry. Again, please let me
know if this might interest you.
Finally, I am getting bookings for a 'Shackleton Boys' talk and would
be happy to give any others that people might like to request.
Heather and I look forward to meeting you all in September - the books
could not have happened without you, so thank you! It is going to be
great fun - come ready to enjoy yourselves!!
|APR 18. I am delighted to announce that the launch of 'Shackleton
Boys' volume 1 - the UK based units, will take place at the Newark Air
Museum on the weekend 1st and 2nd September 2018, in front of their very
smart MR.3 WR977. This is intended to be a major event, with book signings
and hopefully, a large gathering of Shackleton people. your chance to
renew acquaintance with a 'Growler' and each other.
is hoped that the Shackleton Association will have a major presence
over the weekend. Much more detail will follow as plans start to come
Both myself and Grub Street Publishing are very grateful to
all at Newark Air Museum for so enthusiastically supporting this event.
Put the dates in your diaries now!
